Speech Therapy and Stuttering in Your Child: When to Choose Which Approach?

Del Ferro Stuttering Therapy for Young Children

Dossier: wat te doen tegen stotteren?

Where most advice stops at temporary fixes, we focus on the true physical source: the diaphragm. Read the full article below or explore our complete overview of how to tackle stuttering.

When you notice your young child starting to hesitate, repeat words, or prolong letters, it can be quite alarming as a parent. Your natural instinct is to help your child as quickly and effectively as possible. Fortunately, the path to finding help is usually straightforward: you discuss it with a pediatrician, schoolteacher, or family doctor. Nine times out of ten, this leads to a logical recommendation: traditional speech therapy.

For many young children, speech therapy is a wonderful and highly accessible first step. Speech therapists do incredible work when it comes to broad speech and language development, improving articulation, and reducing early speech anxiety in young children. It is local, easily covered by most insurance providers, and provides a safe start.

But what if the stuttering persists despite weekly sessions? When do you choose the traditional approach of learning to live with the stutter, and when is it time for a specific, targeted approach designed to truly overcome it?

What does speech therapy do for a young child who stutters?

Within conventional speech therapy for a young child who stutters, the focus is often on communication as a whole. Therapists examine the interaction at home, the pace of speech, and ways to reduce environmental pressure. For young children, the work is mostly play-based, focusing on building a positive and comfortable speaking environment.

As children grow older and the stuttering becomes more persistent, many speech therapists and conventional stuttering centers shift their focus toward acceptance. The goal then changes to reducing the fear of stuttering and teaching techniques to ‘stutter more fluently’—for instance, by heavily prolonging words. While this can provide significant mental peace of mind and is incredibly valuable, a deeper desire often remains for both parents and children: not learning to live with stuttering, but truly overcoming it. Simply speaking at a normal, natural, and fluent pace.

The Physical Solution: The Breathing Muscle

At the Del Ferro Institute, we look at stuttering from a fundamentally different perspective. In our view, stuttering is not a language or speech disorder, but a physical impediment. The real culprit is the diaphragm muscle—the engine behind both breathing and the voice.

As soon as a child experiences tension or wants to respond too quickly, the diaphragm muscle makes uncontrolled movements. The upward airflow is blocked, the vocal cords lock up, and the word gets completely stuck. The Del Ferro Method focuses entirely on training this specific muscle.

Just as a young child learns to ride a bike or swim by automating a physical action, with us, they learn to permanently maintain control over their breathing. As a result, the breath can no longer physically lock up, and the stuttering disappears.

What to do with your young child?

Our regular stuttering therapy requires a more mature attention span and is geared toward school-aged children from the age of 6. However, this absolutely does not mean you have to passively wait it out with a younger child. On the contrary: a specific method has been developed for toddlers and young children.

During our shorter, 3-day play-based program, a young child learns the speech technique completely through play. No heavy, exhausting sessions, but cheerful breathing exercises wrapped in rhymes and interactive games. In this way, we guide their breathing in the right direction at an early age, preventing a temporary hesitation from turning into a permanent, deeply ingrained habit.

No, we strongly advise against this because the methods are diametrically opposed. While regular speech therapy often focuses on accepting the stutter or teaching techniques to stutter more fluently, at Del Ferro we aim for a permanent solution. With us, your child learns to control the diaphragm muscle in such a way that stuttering becomes physically impossible.

From the very first day of the program, your child will speak completely fluently. Combining these two completely different approaches is confusing. When you choose Del Ferro, you fully commit from day one to completely overcoming stuttering.

At Del Ferro, support starts at an early age. We offer two specific programs, perfectly tailored to your child’s development:

Young children

For the youngest children, we offer a shorter, 3-day play-based program. In this program, we guide their breathing completely through play in the right direction using cheerful games and rhymes.

Children aged 6 and older

From this age, our standard, more intensive 5-day training begins. In this program, we combine the physical speech technique with targeted mental training.

Yes. While traditional speech therapy is typically covered under standard healthcare plans, the specialized stuttering therapy from the Del Ferro Institute is frequently covered fully or partially under supplementary health insurance or extended healthcare benefits, depending on your provider.
